Power to the People! Stick it to the Man! Help Katrina Victims! great non-profit, grass-roots organizations to donate money to

First of all I wanted to thank all of you who donated money at our benefit show at Superfine. We raised over $800, half of which was money matched by Superfine!! Thank you for turning Sept. 11 into a day of compassion and good deed.

I had been looking into the correct organizations to donate to and decided it would be best to give to grass roots movements within New Orleans, which help in long term social development rather than just emergency relief. After all, Katrina would not have caused the damage it did were it not for the unjust social and economic structures already in place, in combination with corruption on the federal level. The organizations I have listed will recieve $150 or more of your dollars. Please feel free to support them even more if you can.

  1. www.madre.org helping battered women and their children relocate, and have access to supplies after hurricane Katrina, esp. those that have been displaced by destroyed women's shelters within New Orleans
  2. Lousisana Domestic Violence Victims Hurricane Relief Fund, similar to the above organization, tel # 225-752-1296
  3. www.noahleans.com offering relocation assitance and job placemet for musicans affected by Katrina
  4. www.federationsoutherncoop.com assistance for southen black farmers, forming cooperatives, credit unions among many things, and expecting roughly 300 homeless after Katrina
  5. $150 of your donations has also gone to an individual family, victim of the Southeast Asian tsunami in Kanyukumari, India, who lost their home and work. This was the original intention of the benefit before any damage was done by Katrina.

I was able to find these organization with the help of:
